Carpet FAQ's
Q: What carpet cleaning method is used by DUCTZ?
A: DUCTZ primarily uses the Hot Water Extraction (Deep Steam Cleaning) as recommended by the major carpet manufactures. DUCTZ uses traditional
extraction wands for lightly soiled carpet.
We utilize a rotary extraction machine for carpets with heavier levels of soiling, or carpets that the pile is matted
down. This machine does a nice job of lifting the pile. Click here for
in depth information about cleaning method pros and cons

Q: Do you use Truck Mounted Equipment or Portable Equipment?
A: DUCTZ of the Upper Bay currently uses portable equipment.
-The portable machines chosen by DUCTZ are the most current technology available.  Our Hot water extractors have received the Gold Rating from the CRI
seal of approval program (
Carpet-Rug Institute) for cleaning effectiveness. These machines are powerful, and since our hose lengths are relatively short,
we keep very high temperatures at the cleaning spray jets, assuring the best possible cleaning ability.

These machines come completely into the building (no open doors to let heat or cooling escape, critters in, pets out, or pose a security issue due to open
doors).  They can easily go to whatever floor level is needed, whether in a home, condo or apartment building, or high rise offices and larger buildings.
- Truck mounted equipment may have more “suction”, but, the vehicle itself must be running during the cleaning or a separate engine (sometimes with a
propane or oil-fired heater) is used to power the unit and heat the water. In both cases, the truck MUST be parked well away from the house and
positioned so that exhaust fumes do not enter the house.

- Truck  mounted enthusiasts promote the high temperatures the equipment can achieve, however much of that advantage is lost as the water travels
down a hundred foot hose and by the time it reaches the carpet has lost a significant amount of its heat.  Our Solus 500 machines have shorter hose
lengths and our water temperature stays near 212 degrees F at the carpet jet and  the cleaning agent has up to 500psi of agitation pressure out of the
spray or rotary wand.

Q: How often should my carpet be professionally cleaned?
A: If carpet is cleaned before it becomes too dirty, the cleaning will be easier and more successful. When a carpet becomes significantly soiled, it can
result in damage to the carpet fibers that might not be reversed.
Carpet in a typical household should be professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months depending upon the number of residents, amount and type of
activity, and whether the carpet is light or dark color, and the degree of traffic on the carpet.  Some clients have them cleaned every 6 months.

Q: Do I need a carpet protector?
A: the simple answer is yes, it's Highly recommended. Many more details and more questions about carpet protector here, but in a nutshell
,- Carpet protector helps carpet fibers resist soiling.
- Helps spills blot up before they become stains.
- Helps stains release more easily when carpet and upholstery are professionally cleaned.
- Helps carpet and upholstery stay cleaner longer.
- Effective against fruit drinks, soft drinks and frozen fruit treat.
- Improves Vacuuming. Vacuuming is actually more effective with Scotchgard™ Protector. Dirt is more easily picked up, and fewer passes are required
with the vacuum.
- Carpet protector helps keep dry soil and oily soils from sticking to the carpet fibers making vacuuming more efficient.

Q: Can I get just as good a job by renting a carpet cleaning machine at the hardware or grocery store?
A: Shaw Industries, the largest carpet manufacturer, recommends professional carpet cleaning over “Do-It-Yourself” because of the potential problems
that can occur from using rental equipment - such as yellowing, over wetting, fiber tip damage, severe re soiling, overuse of detergents, etc.
Most rental units available do not produce adequate heat or pressure to properly clean, tend to over wet the carpet, and may actually damage the carpet
fibers.   Go ahead and rent a machine (often for not much less than having them professionally cleaned), then have us come clean them again.  You will
be amazed at what was left behind.

Q: How is my home protected:
A: DUCTZ uses every degree of care and respect in your home.  Technicians wear shoe covers, use corner guards to protect your walls, and protect wood
trim, and even wipe down baseboards during the cleaning process.  Since our equipment comes completely into your home or business, there are no
open doors to allow intruders in, let pets out, or heat or Air conditioning to sneak out the door.

Q: Is your staff trained and educated?
A: DUCTZ technicians are certified carpet and upholstery cleaning technicians. Certified by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration
Certification), the world's most recognized certification organization for carpet and upholstery cleaners. They’ve learned the science of carpet fibers, soils,
and the agents to properly remove those soils.   They leave your carpet as fresh and clean as it can be.

Q: Tell me more about your staff:
A: DUCTZ staff are well groomed, arrive in uniform at the prescribed time (none of this “sometime between 8am and 3pm stuff) in our clean, logo’d
DUCTZ truck.  They are courteous and considerate of your home and respect you and your home in every way.  We stand behind our work.  We expect you
to be completely impressed with our service, and make that our promise.  We depend on your referral to fuel our business.

Q: How soon can I walk on the carpet after cleaning?
A: You can lightly walk on the carpet immediately, though we recommend with just socks (without shoes) to prevent soiling.  4 hours is usually sufficient to
return to normal traffic, pets, children, etc.  Some carpets may still feel damp for up to 18 hours, this is normal depending on how soiled the carpet was
and the degree of cleaning required.  Wait at least 24 hours to remove any foam blocks, or plastic tabs from under furniture.

Q: Do You Clean Upholstery?
A: yes, we use similar techniques to clean upholstery, however fiber identification and color fastness testing is a bit more critical.  Upholstered furniture
uses more varied materials and methods of manufacture than carpet. One cleaning process will not work on all upholstered furniture. Special
considerations such as color fastness and dimensional stability of the fabric must be determined.  DUCTZ cleans using the process that is appropriate to
fabric in that particular chair or sofa.

Q: If my child has been diagnosed with Asthma, should I remove the carpets from my home?
A: The weight of evidence does not support a link between carpet and asthma and allergy symptoms, even though some health care providers believe
there is an association. In fact, clean, dry, well-maintained carpet actually improves indoor air quality.
Researcher and toxicology expert Mitchell Sauerhoff, Ph.D., DABT, reviewed 23 U.S. and international scientific studies and concluded in "
Carpet, Asthma
and Allergies - Myth or Reality," that carpet's alleged negative characteristics are not consistent with current research. In fact, he concludes that the
literature on carpet and asthma or allergies confirms that children and adults living with carpet do not have an increased incidence of asthma or allergy.
In 1993 a study titled "Global Strategy for Asthma Management and Prevention" was published collaboratively by the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood
Institute and the World Health Organization. The 2007 update to the original report states that there is no evidence that replacing carpet with hard surface
flooring has a health benefit.

Q: What about carpet and IAQ (Indoor Air Quality)
A: Carpet helps improve IAQ by trapping allergens and other particles so they can be vacuumed away.  Plus, carpet is the lowest VOC (volatile organic
compound)  emitter of common floor choices, and requires fewer cleaning chemicals than other floor coverings. Carpet acts like a filter, keeping dust and
allergens out of the air we breathe.  Simply put, what falls to the carpet (dust, pet dander and many other particulates that we breathe in) tends to stay
trapped in the carpet until it is removed through vacuuming or extraction cleaning.  Smooth floor surfaces allow dust and other allergens to re-circulate into
the breathing zone, so a properly maintained carpet actually contributes to improved air quality.
Independent testing has compared the distribution of airborne dust associated with normal activities on hard and soft flooring surfaces. Findings show
that walking on hard surfaces disturbs more particles than walking on carpeted surfaces. In contrast, carpeted surfaces trap more particles so that
walking disturbs fewer particles, resulting in less dust in the breathing zone of children and adults.
More on the Study

Q: Will my carpet be waterproof after a Scotchgard application?
A: Scotchgard Protector is not intended to be used as a waterproofing agent for carpet, however, it does provide improved resistance to water-based
substances.

Q: Is Scotchgard pet and child safe?
A: Yes, all Scotchgard carpet protector products go through extensive testing and have been safely used in homes for many years. Most new carpets
include Scotchgard protection right from the mill.

Q: Will water "bead up" on carpet that’s been protected?
A: Sometimes it will, but often the beading is not evident.  This can be caused by spaces between loosely woven carpet pile. It does not affect the ability to
resist stain and soils.  Most common household liquids can be easily blotted up even if the spill does not appear to be  beading.

Q: How should carpet featuring Scotchgard Protector be cleaned?
A: The primary, every day,  cleaning method is vacuuming with an upright vacuum with a beater bar that will agitate the pile while it lifts soils from deep in
the carpet.  You should blot up spills right away (using a blot technique rather than a scrubbing method). Immediate attention to spills and spots will make
removal easier.
The Scotchgard™ Protector Warranty requires that your carpet be cleaned by professional hot water extraction (steam cleaning)  at least every two years.
DUCTZ is qualified to professionally clean your carpet, and re-apply the Scotchgard protector.
