Carpet Cleaning Methods and Techniques

There are several methods commonly used to clean carpets
Hot water Extraction (steam cleaning)
Carpet Shampooing, sometimes called dry foam shampoo
Bonnet Cleaning
Absorbent Compound/Powder cleaning
HWE Hot water extraction (AKA Steam Cleaning, or sometimes called Deep Cleaning):
"Hot Water Extraction" or "Steam Cleaning" is the most popular cleaning method and is the method nearly all carpet manufacturers (Shaw Industries and
Mohawk) and fiber producers recommend. It’s often called “deep cleaning” as hot water and detergent are sprayed through jet nozzles onto the face
yarns deep into the carpet pile. Soil is suspended and immediately removed by wet vacuuming. The combination of heat and spray jet agitation make
this method very effective with little damage to face yarns. HWE is effective in removing the cleaning agent, leaving little or no residue in the carpet.
(When detergent residue is left behind, as in some other methods, the carpet will soil more rapidly than it should since the left behind detergents do what
they are designed to do…attract soils).
Carpet Shampooing
The Dry Foam shampoo method creates a foam in the carpet, that when allowed to dry is supposed to attract soils, and then the dried foam/soil is
vacuumed up. This method used very little water, so sometimes its called Dry Foam Shampoo. It has advantages of leaving carpets fairly dry, but
disadvantages in that less soil is suspended and removed and not all the soil/detergent mix is removed by dry vacuuming.
The Rotary Shampoo method provides lots of detergent action and aggressive agitation. A foaming solution is scrubbed into the pile with a rotary brush.
The wet foam is vacuumed away, leaving the carpet relatively damp. When dry, the remaining suspended soils and detergent are dry vacuumed.
Vacuuming after cleaning does not always remove all the detergent, and soils can be attracted to any remaining detergent so carpet can resoil quickly.
Bonnet Cleaning
Bonnet Cleaning is simply an adaptation of hard floor spray buffing to carpets. This method for carpet maintenance consists of the use of a rotary or
oscillating brush adapted with a stiff brush or drive block designed to drive wet, damp or dry pads. The carpet can be sprayed with the cleaning solution
and/or the pads can be soaked in the cleaning solution and squeezed lightly before placing the pad under the driving brush. An advantage is that it is
fairly dry and there is little downtime to use the carpet. The disadvantage is that only the top of the carpet gets cleaned. Most major carpet manufacturers
do not recommend this cleaning method due to the potential to distort fibers or cause fuzzing.
Absorbent Compound Cleaning: This method provides some soil extraction and requires no drying time. A carrier is impregnated with a dry solvent
detergent and its worked into the carpet where it absorbs moisture and soils. The carpet is then vacuumed to remove the soil and carrier agent. Dirty
carpet becomes visibly cleaner. This method is fairly quick, and has very little downtime, however it is difficult to remove all the cleaning agent after
working it into the pile, so the improved appearance is not as long lasting as Hot Water Extraction. Consumer products such as “Love My Carpet” , Carpet
Fresh”, and “Arm and Hammer” are examples of absorbent compounds.
Equipment used by DUCTZ : While many will say that truck mounted systems are the only way to go (and they are pretty terrific) , DUCTZ selection of
portable equipment has several advantages. DUCTZ utilizes both high tech spray wands, as well as rotary cleaning machines depending on the carpet
and degree of soiling to clean and extract the water and cleaning agent.
-The portable machines chosen by DUCTZ are the most current technology available. Our Hot water extractors have received the Gold Rating from the
CRI seal of approval program (Carpet-Rug Institute) for cleaning effectiveness. These machines are powerful, and since our hose lengths are relatively
short, we keep very high temperatures at the cleaning spray jets, assuring the best possible cleaning ability.
These machines come completely into the building (no open doors to let heat or cooling escape, critters in, pets out, or pose a security issue due to open
doors). They can easily go to whatever floor level is needed, whether in a home, condo or apartment building, or high rise offices and larger buildings.
- Truck mounted equipment may have more “suction”, but, the vehicle itself must be running during the cleaning or a separate engine (sometimes with a
propane or oil-fired heater) is used to power the unit and heat the water. In both cases, the truck MUST be parked well away from the house and
positioned so that exhaust fumes do not enter the house.
- Truck mounted enthusiasts promote the high temperatures the equipment can achieve, however much of that advantage is lost as the water travels
down a hundred foot hose and by the time it reaches the carpet has lost a significant amount of its heat. Our Solus 500 machines have shorter hose
lengths and our water temperature stays near 212 degrees F and jet the cleaning agent at up to 500psi out of the spray or rotary wand.
